Short answer: a private deep-sea fishing charter in Punta Cana costs about US$500 to US$750 for four hours for the whole boat, and US$940 to US$1,250 for a nine-hour day, with captain, mate, tackle, drinks and usually the hotel transfer included. If you are one or two people, a shared charter is cheaper: from US$129 per angler for four hours. The fish you are most likely to catch are mahi-mahi (dorado), wahoo, tuna and barracuda; blue marlin is possible but never guaranteed.

Every price below comes from the operator's own website, read on 4 November 2026. Prices are in US dollars. Private prices are per boat, not per person, so we also show what they work out to per angler when the boat is full. Confirm the current price, the capacity and what is included in writing before you pay a deposit.

Private charters are priced per boat and include the crew, gear and drinks; shared charters are priced per person. Big Marlin Charters says all its trips are private and never shared with other groups, and that its price includes the hotel transfer (Big Marlin, Spanish page). Atlántida Punta Cana adds transport as an extra from Bávaro (Atlántida). The table shows each operator's published price as listed on 4 November 2026.

Private charters: what the price includes

Big Marlin Charters runs five boats from Bávaro. Its rates page lists the 4-hour, 6-hour and 9-hour prices in the table above, per boat, and says they include the captain and mate, bait and tackle, outriggers, a fighting chair, Penn and Shimano rods and reels, cold drinks, beer and rum, and a private van transfer, with sandwiches on 6-hour and full-day trips (Big Marlin rates). Its Spanish page gives the capacities (Cana up to 4, Blue Sky and Gone Dog up to 5, Sherlock up to 6, Fortuna up to 8), says a booking is confirmed with a US$100 deposit, and adds that it fishes about 16 miles offshore on 4-hour trips, 18 on 6-hour trips and up to 22 on full days (Big Marlin, Spanish page). It also sells 4-hour fishing-plus-snorkel trips on the Cana from US$550.

Atlántida Punta Cana's Marlín Fever leaves from Marina Cap Cana: US$600 for 4 hours, US$800 for 6 and US$1,000 for 8. The listed inclusions are the captain, a cooler with ice, sodas and water, a snorkel mask, a swimming board and access to Cap Cana for all guests. Round-trip private transport is US$30 inside Cap Cana and an extra US$50 from Bávaro or Punta Cana hotels. It asks for a US$200 deposit, adds 5% for card payments (it says this covers government taxes), refunds the deposit in full if you cancel 48 hours before departure, and if the weather is unsuitable it moves you to the next good day, returning the whole deposit if conditions do not clear during your stay (Atlántida).

Shared charters for one or two people

If it is just you, or a couple, a full boat is poor value. Adventures Finder in Bávaro sells a 4-hour shared trip on a 36 to 42-foot sport-fishing boat at US$129 per adult angler, with hotel pickup in Punta Cana and Bávaro, captain and mate, Shimano and Penn gear, bait, and water, soft drinks and beer. Departures are at 8:00 am and 1:00 pm, the minimum age is 6 and groups are 7 to 12 people. The page shows two different figures for children and for non-fishing observers (US$80 in one place, US$99 in another), so confirm that rate before you book (Adventures Finder).

Fishing is by trolling: the rods sit in holders while the boat moves and you take one when a fish strikes. With a shared boat, expect to take turns. A shared charter from Marina Cap Cana listed on WannaBoats takes two to five clients, from US$175 per person for 4 hours or US$275 for 6 hours with food, and includes transport from Punta Cana and Bávaro hotels but not from Uvero Alto, La Romana or Bayahibe (WannaBoats).

Per-person math: when a private boat beats a shared seat

Our arithmetic from the published prices: Big Marlin's Cana for 4 hours is US$500 for up to 4 people, or US$125 each when full; the Sherlock is US$650 for up to 6, or about US$108 each; the Fortuna is US$700 for up to 8, or US$87.50 each (Big Marlin rates, capacities from the Spanish page). A shared seat at US$129 is cheaper only for one to three people. From four anglers up, a private boat costs about the same per person, and you get the boat, the timing and the rods to yourselves.

Budget a tip for the crew on top. Adventures Finder lists cash for tips among the things its price does not include (Adventures Finder).

What you can catch, and when

Operators name blue and white marlin, sailfish, mahi-mahi (dorado), wahoo, yellowfin tuna, barracuda and king mackerel off Punta Cana (Adventures Finder, Atlántida). Big Marlin says the season runs all year, with mahi-mahi and wahoo strongest in winter. On blue marlin its own page gives two windows: May to July in the main text, and mid-July to late September (with October sometimes good) in its FAQ (Big Marlin, Spanish page). If marlin is the reason for the trip, ask the captain which months they would pick before you set dates.

Recent customer reviews shown on Big Marlin's Spanish page mostly mention mahi-mahi, barracuda and wahoo. Catches are never guaranteed, and Adventures Finder says plainly that a charter promising one is not being honest (Adventures Finder).

Weather, seasickness, kids and your catch

Big Marlin says the captain needs coast-guard authorisation to sail, and if conditions are unsafe you can change the date or get the deposit back. Children under 5 cannot join its fishing trips and under-16s must come with an adult. The catch is yours: catch and release (especially marlin and other billfish), take it to your hotel, or have a local beach restaurant cook it (Big Marlin, Spanish page).

Adventures Finder warns that the Atlantic off Punta Cana can be choppy, especially in the winter months, and suggests taking a seasickness remedy the night before or the morning of the trip. It does not recommend its shared trip for pregnant guests or people with reduced mobility (Adventures Finder). A morning departure, when offered, gets you back before the afternoon heat.

Fishing from Las Terrenas instead

If you are staying on the Samaná Peninsula, Fishing & Tours Las Terrenas runs private trips only, priced for a group of four: a 3-hour inshore trip for snapper, grouper, amberjack and small tuna at US$250, and a 5-hour deep-sea trip at US$350 (plus US$80 per extra person; US$600 for six), going out to water up to 6,000 feet deep. Fishing trips leave at 7:00 am from Pedro Francisco Bono 5, near Coco Plaza, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before (Fishing Las Terrenas). Our things to do in Las Terrenas guide covers the rest of the peninsula.

Questions to ask before you pay the deposit

Ask in writing: is the price per boat or per person, and for how many anglers; is the hotel transfer included from your hotel (Uvero Alto, Cap Cana and La Romana are often extra); which marina it leaves from; what happens to the deposit if the sea is too rough; whether food is included or only drinks; and whether you can keep or cook part of the catch. If you would rather spend the boat time snorkelling with a group, compare with our private catamaran prices.
