Why La Romana

La Romana on the south-east coast is home to Casa de Campo, a resort with wedding venues, villas, catering and group facilities, and to Altos de Chavón, a recreation of a Mediterranean village perched above the Chavón River. Conceived by Italian architect Roberto Copa and industrialist Charles Bluhdorn, Altos de Chavón has a cultural centre, an archaeological museum and an amphitheatre, and its stone streets and church are a classic backdrop for ceremonies and photos.

Getting there is easy: La Romana Casa de Campo International Airport (LRM) sits right next to the town and the resort, about 109 km from Santo Domingo. Punta Cana (PUJ) and Santo Domingo (SDQ) offer more flights with a longer transfer.

Weddings, groups and day trips

La Romana suits couples planning a larger, full-service resort wedding where guests stay in villas or hotel rooms on site, and groups that want golf, beach and a wedding in one place. Casa de Campo quotes per date and guest count; ask what is included (ceremony site, reception venue, food and beverage, accommodation blocks) and its policy on outside vendors.

Bayahibe, the departure point for most Isla Saona trips, is about 16 km east. Isla Catalina, a small island just off La Romana, is known for snorkeling and diving on its reef wall: Casa Daniel in Bayahibe runs boat dives to Catalina (dives from US$44), and Quetzal Catamaran runs small-group Saona and Catalina catamaran trips. These make easy welcome-day or post-wedding outings for guests.

Music and video

ExperiencesDR's in-house Wedding DJ starts from US$2,500 and Event DJ from US$1,000; wedding films and drone coverage of Altos de Chavón or the beach are priced on request. Confirm with the venue whether outside entertainment and drones are allowed.

La Romana or Punta Cana for your wedding?

Both are on the east coast and both have resort venues, but the feel is different. Punta Cana and Cap Cana have the larger choice of resorts, independent planners, photographers and florists, and the most flights into PUJ. La Romana concentrates everything in one estate: Casa de Campo's venues, villas and catering, with Altos de Chavón's stone village and amphitheatre as a distinctive ceremony and photo setting, and its own airport (LRM) next door for guests who can route through it.

Many couples mix the two: guests fly into PUJ, the wedding is held in La Romana, and the group spends a day on the water from Bayahibe. If you are comparing quotes, ask each venue for the same items (ceremony fee, reception minimum, accommodation block, outside-vendor policy, rain plan) so the totals are like for like. Isla Saona is a 110 km² island in Cotubanamá National Park, so a Saona day trip is a full outing; Catalina's shorter boat ride from La Romana suits guests with less time.

Getting guests to La Romana

Guests have three realistic routes. Flying into La Romana Casa de Campo International Airport (LRM) is the shortest transfer, since it sits beside the town and the resort. Santo Domingo (SDQ) is about 109 km away, roughly an hour and a half by car. Punta Cana (PUJ) usually has the most international flights. For a wedding weekend, share all three options on your website and pre-book group shuttles from the airport most guests choose.
