Where to hold a retreat in the Dominican Republic

Retreat venues in our listings cluster in four areas, and each suits a different kind of group. The Samaná Peninsula, and Las Terrenas in particular, has the most dedicated retreat houses: hillside yoga villas, jungle eco-retreats and a limestone-grotto property, all within about 30 minutes of Samaná El Catey airport (AZS). Cabarete on the north coast pairs beachfront yoga with the kite and surf scene and is roughly 18 km from Puerto Plata airport (POP). In the Cordillera Central, Jarabacoa and Constanza offer cool mountain air, rivers and forest, a real change from the coast for groups who want hiking and quiet.

Puerto Plata's hills add a small eco-lodge option at Tubagua, and some wedding venues double as retreat bases: Villa Serena in Las Galeras hosts wellness retreats for groups in its 21 rooms, and Sublime Samaná at Playa Cosón lists company retreats alongside weddings.

How to choose a retreat venue

Start with group size, because capacity varies a lot. Yoga Life Villa hosts retreats of up to 23 guests in 10 suites, Zaria Eco-Retreat lists 10 rooms for up to 30 guests, Shiva's Cave Retreat Center sleeps up to 18 across one to four homes, and Altocerro in Constanza has villas for one to seven people plus a camping kiosk for 100. Next, check what the venue actually provides: some (Yoga Life Villa, Yoga Loft Zen) include daily yoga and vegetarian meals, while others rent the space and leave the programme to the facilitator.

Then think about transfers. Zaria Eco-Retreat offers complimentary round-trip transfers from Santo Domingo (SDQ) for groups of 15 or more, according to its website; for other venues, ask whether they arrange airport pickup and from which airport. Finally, ask about the practice space itself (covered, open-air or riverside, like Jarabacoa Mountain Garden's wooden platform for yoga and Pilates), Wi-Fi, and whether the venue can be booked exclusively.

Best season and what it costs

Coastal venues are busiest in the northern-hemisphere winter, which on the Samaná Peninsula also overlaps with humpback whale season (local operators list roughly mid-January to late March), a popular add-on for retreat groups. The mountain towns are a good counterpoint in the hotter months: Constanza is known for having the coldest average temperature of any settlement in the Caribbean.

None of the retreat venues we list publishes a fixed group price; rates depend on dates, room mix, meals and exclusivity, so request a quote with your dates, headcount and programme. For extras, ExperiencesDR's in-house add-ons include an Event DJ from US$1,000 for a closing party or sunset session, plus photo, video and social content priced on request.
