The Colonial City of Santo Domingo has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990 (UNESCO). It is compact enough to see on foot in a morning, but the museums, the Alcázar de Colón and the Ozama Fortress charge entry, and a guide makes the 500 years of history make sense. Tours differ mainly in length, group size and whether entry tickets are included.
We compared the tours sold by operators we list, using the prices on their own websites read on 28 October 2026. Prices are per person in US dollars unless marked RD$.
Guided walking tours
Colonial Tour & Travel runs a daily three-hour walking tour at US$35 for adults and US$25 for children, with guide and tickets included. It visits the First Cathedral of the Americas, the Alcázar de Colón, the Museum of the Royal Houses, the Ozama Fortress, Calle Las Damas and the Amber Museum (Colonial Tours, Santo Domingo).
Urbano Tours charges US$45 per person for its Colonial City walking tour, with departures every hour from 9:00 to 3:30 pm. It includes entry to the listed museums and sites (among them the Ozama Fortress, the Museum of the Royal Houses and the Rum Museum) and ends with a mamajuana toast on El Conde. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before (Urbano Tours).
Cheaper and shorter options
Kayoe Excursiones says it started the free walking tour in the Dominican Republic in 2020: about 1 hour 30 minutes, in Spanish or English, and you pay what you think it was worth. Its shared Colonial Experience tour is 2 hours 30 minutes for US$25 with entry to one monument or museum, and a private tuk-tuk tour starts at US$25 for 45 minutes, with a 90-minute option. It says groups are capped at six and cancellation is free up to 24 hours ahead (Kayoe).
Chu Chu Colonial is a 45-minute narrated train ride with audio in seven languages and a hostess pointing out each site, for RD$650 (US$12) per adult and RD$400 (US$7) per child; it leaves from Isabel la Católica 60, opposite Parque Colón. Dominicans and residents get close to 50% off with a cédula (Chu Chu Colonial). It is the easiest choice with small children or anyone who can't walk far in the heat.
Colonial Tours also sells a two-hour guided bike tour that ends with a 15-minute 4D film about Francis Drake's 1586 raid, at US$45 (Colonial Tours, Santo Domingo).

Beyond the Colonial Zone
To add Los Tres Ojos caves and the Columbus Lighthouse, Kayoe's four-hour tour costs US$35 with transport, guide and park entry, and children go free (Kayoe). Urbano Tours combines Los Tres Ojos, the Columbus Lighthouse and Boca Chica beach for US$65–70, and sells an all-attractions city tour for US$54–64 (Urbano Tours).
The day trip from Punta Cana
Colonial Tour & Travel runs a Santo Domingo full-day cultural tour from Bávaro and Punta Cana on Wednesdays, at US$80 per adult and US$40 per child (Colonial Tours, Punta Cana). It is a long day on the road, so it suits people who want to see the capital once without booking a night there.
If you would rather stay a night, the walking tours above are cheaper and less rushed, and our Santo Domingo listings include Colonial City hotels and venues. Prinair Tours, a Santo Domingo travel agency we list, is another place to ask for a quote. For other ideas from the east coast, see our best excursions from Punta Cana.
Tips for the day
Mornings are cooler and the museums are open, so book an early slot. Wear walking shoes for the cobblestones, carry water, and dress with shoulders covered if you want to go inside the Cathedral. Check whether your tour includes entry tickets: Colonial Tours and Urbano include them, while the free tour does not.
