Getting married in Santo Domingo's Colonial Zone: venues, logistics and costs
How to plan a wedding in the UNESCO-listed Colonial City: seven historic venues compared, caterers, transport, guest activities and the best months.

Most Dominican destination weddings happen on a beach. A wedding in Santo Domingo's Colonial City is the alternative: stone courtyards, 500-year-old streets and a reception a short walk from the Cathedral. The district covers about 106 hectares beside the Ozama River, was founded in 1502 and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990, which is why its buildings are protected and why so many of them are now small hotels and restaurants.
This guide compares the seven venues in our directory, explains how catering and transport work in a dense historic district, and suggests things for guests to do. Facts about each venue come from its own website; history and climate come from the sources listed at the end.
The setting: what makes the Colonial City different
The Colonial City was the first seat of Spanish government in the Americas. Calle Las Damas, laid out in 1502, is considered the first paved street in the New World; the Cathedral on Parque Colón dates from the early 16th century; and the Alcázar de Colón, the palace of Diego Columbus built around 1510, was restored in 1952. Many of the surrounding houses were built in stone around courtyards, the layout that now gives venues their ceremony spaces.
Practically, that means ceremonies usually happen in a courtyard, garden or historic hall rather than outdoors on open ground, receptions are often in the same building, and guests can walk between the hotel, the ceremony and dinner.
Seven venues compared
Billini Hotel is the largest option. It faces the Cathedral and publishes five spaces: Gala (545 m², up to 300 guests), La Casona (up to 270), Casa Mía (150), the Rooftop Terrace (50–80) and Salón Iris (30–50). It offers customised packages, event coordination and guest-room rates across 24 suites in restored buildings.
Hodelpa Nicolás de Ovando occupies the historic Casa de Ovando. Its wedding offer includes a ceremony in landscaped gardens, a wedding coordinator, a civil officiant, decoration and background music, which makes it the simplest choice for a legal ceremony and reception in one place.
Casas del XVI, now part of IHG's Vignette Collection, rents one or more restored houses for exclusive use, with coordination, on-site catering and furniture. It suits a small wedding where the group takes over a house for the weekend.
Atarazana sits opposite the Alcázar and has hosted events since 1972. It promotes Dominican-themed receptions with folk music and Creole cuisine, a good fit for couples who want guests to taste the country.
El Mesón de la Cava, open since 1967, is in the Mirador Sur area rather than the zone itself. It offers a terrace for 180 seated, a cave hall for 70, three private rooms for 15–30 and a garden for 80 seated or 130 standing, with plated wedding plans for 20–30 guests and buffets for 30 or more.
El Búho Eatery has served guests since 2018 in a 16th-century property. Two halls and a covered garden patio seat 25–130 with space for dancing and live entertainment, or up to 180 for a cocktail reception, and the kitchen mixes Dominican-tropical and international dishes.
Fixie Lofts is the most private option: a villa built in 1503 as part of the first hospital in the Americas, rented whole, with a colonial courtyard, stone arches and a private pool. It hosts getting-ready sessions, symbolic ceremonies of up to 20 guests, cocktails for up to 30 and seated courtyard dinners for up to 20 from 6 to 11 p.m., with a partner events team for catering, furniture, lighting and décor.

Catering, transport and music
If your venue does not cater in-house, Anselmo Catering (15+ years, covering Santo Domingo and other cities) offers custom wedding menus, themed stations and a Dominican drinks bar, and Banquet RD (more than a decade in business) does buffets, tapas and rentals. Streets in the zone are narrow, so ask your venue where vehicles can stop; Dominican Limousine lists Santo Domingo among the areas it covers for couple and bridal-party transport and guest shuttles.
For music, ExperiencesDR's in-house add-ons are a Wedding DJ from US$2,500 and an Event DJ from US$1,000, with video quoted on request. Check each venue's sound rules before booking, especially for courtyards next to hotel rooms.
Guest activities and timing
Plan a welcome activity the day before: Colonial Tour & Travel's 3-hour walking tour (US$35) includes the Cathedral, the Alcázar and the Museo de las Casas Reales, Urbano Tours (US$45) ends with a mamajuana toast, and the 45-minute Chu Chu Colonial train (US$12) is easy for older guests.
Santo Domingo averages about 24 °C in January and 27 °C in July. Outside the north coast, rain is most likely from May to November, and hurricane season runs June to November, so December to April is the easiest window for courtyard ceremonies. Book indoor back-up space whatever the month.
