Yoga retreats in the Dominican Republic: where to go and how to choose

The DR's retreat regions (Las Terrenas, Las Galeras, Cabarete, Jarabacoa, Constanza), the venues we list in each, and what to ask before booking or hosting.

Whether you are joining a retreat or hosting one, the Dominican Republic offers three very different settings: Samaná's jungle-and-beach peninsula, the north coast around Cabarete, and the cool central mountains.

Las Terrenas and the Samaná Peninsula: the densest cluster. Yoga Life Villa hosts retreats for up to 23 guests in 10 suites; ZÂRIA EcoRetreat in El Valle, El Retiro, Shiva's Cave Retreat Center, Sublime Samaná and Hotel Alisei round it out. Villa Serena in Las Galeras offers group wellness retreats.

Cabarete and the north coast: The Yoga Loft at Zen Cabarete runs classes and retreats by Kite Beach; Natura Cabana sits nearby; Tubagua Ecolodge offers a hilltop setting above Puerto Plata.

Mountains: Jarabacoa Mountain Garden has a riverside platform for yoga and Pilates, Jamaca de Dios offers cabins, and Altocerro in Constanza suits cooler-climate retreats.

Questions to ask: maximum group size and room mix, whether the shala can be rented separately, meals (vegetarian/vegan), airport transfer times (PUJ, SDQ, POP or Samaná El Catey), and what is included in the published rate.

Hosting a retreat? ExperiencesDR's in-house team offers retreat video/photo (pricing on request) and sunset DJ sets (Event DJ from US$1,000).

The three regions compared

Samaná Peninsula: the most venues (Yoga Life Villa up to 23 guests, Zaria Eco-Retreat up to 30, Shiva's Cave up to 18), jungle and beach settings, about 30 minutes from Samaná El Catey (AZS) to Las Terrenas, and whale season in winter. North coast: Cabarete's Yoga Loft Zen on Kite Beach (operating since 2007) and Natura Cabana (bungalows for 2–6, spa, two restaurants), about 18 km from Puerto Plata airport (POP), plus Tubagua Ecolodge in the hills. Mountains: Jarabacoa Mountain Garden's riverside platform, Jamaca de Dios's trails and lagoon, and Altocerro in Constanza, known as the coldest settlement in the Caribbean, with villas for 1–7 and a camping kiosk for 100.

Joining vs hosting

Joining: look for venues with a published retreat calendar (Zaria lists scheduled retreats; Yoga Loft Zen offers individual retreats). Hosting: you need exclusive space, catering and transfers; Yoga Life Villa rents its studio, and Zaria offers free SDQ transfers for 15+ guests. In both cases, confirm what the published rate includes.

Airports by region

Samaná Peninsula: Samaná El Catey (AZS), about 30 minutes to Las Terrenas; Santo Domingo (SDQ) for more flights. North coast: Puerto Plata (POP) in Sosúa, about 18 km from Cabarete. Mountains: Santiago (STI) or Santo Domingo (SDQ), then by road through the Cordillera Central. Share the recommended airport with participants early, because it shapes everyone's travel budget.
