Hurricane season and Dominican Republic weddings and events: dates, real risk and contract checklist

The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 and peaks on September 10, per NOAA. What that means for a DR wedding or event date, what happened in Irma (2017) and Fiona (2022), and the deposit, cancellation and backup-plan questions to settle before you book.

NOAA's National Hurricane Center defines the Atlantic hurricane season, which includes the Caribbean, as June 1 to November 30. The season peaks on September 10, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October; an average season (1991–2020) brings 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes across the whole basin (NOAA NHC).

Most weeks in that window pass without a storm near the Dominican Republic, and couples marry there every month. But a storm at the wrong moment can cancel flights and move or cancel a ceremony, so a date in late August to October needs a plan B and a contract you have read closely. Sources re-read 21 October 2026.

Month by month: how much risk

NOAA's average-season benchmarks show how activity builds: the first named storm typically forms around June 20, the first hurricane around August 11 and the first major hurricane around September 1, with the peak on September 10 (NOAA NHC). In practice: December to May is outside the season; June and July are early season; mid-August to mid-October is the highest-risk window; November is late season. These are basin-wide averages, not a forecast for any island.

What has actually happened

Irma, September 2017: Global News reported a Mississauga couple whose 33-person wedding party had arrived in Punta Cana; as Irma approached they were told the ceremony would probably move indoors, then were evacuated on a flight home, and the wedding was postponed (Global News).

Fiona, September 2022: NOAA's final report says Fiona's eye made landfall on the southeastern coast near Boca de Yuma around 0730 UTC on 19 September (3:30 AM local time), crossed the eastern Dominican Republic and left off the north coast by 1500 UTC. The highest gust reported in the country was 85 kt at Samaná El Catey, with 70 kt at La Romana and 69 kt at Punta Cana (NOAA NHC).

Read the contract before you pick a September date

Resort wedding contracts are usually strict. Hard Rock Punta Cana, for example, takes a US$500 non-refundable deposit, requires final payment 45 days before the ceremony and makes all payments non-refundable for cancellations 44 days or less before the wedding (Hard Rock). Ask every venue and vendor: Is there a weather or force-majeure clause, and who decides it applies? Can the date be moved rather than cancelled, and for how long? What is the indoor or covered backup for the ceremony and reception, and is there a charge?

Ask your guests to check flexible airfares and travel insurance that covers hurricanes, and buy it early: policies generally stop covering a storm once it has been named.

Events and retreats

The same logic applies to corporate retreats, incentive trips and private events: build a date-change clause into venue contracts for August to October, keep a covered space on hold and decide in advance who makes the call and by when. Our corporate hub has a short planning form if you want help shortlisting venues.

For in-house entertainment at an indoor backup, ExperiencesDR's event DJ starts at US$1,000 and the wedding DJ at US$2,500: see the add-ons.
