Kitesurfing lessons in Cabarete (2026): prices and wind
2026 kite lesson prices from Cabarete schools: US$69–85 per private hour, 9-hour beginner courses US$540–720, the windiest months and Buen Hombre.

Cabarete, on the north coast, is about 20 minutes from Puerto Plata airport (POP), and several of its kite schools teach on Kite Beach (KiteDR, GoKite). Most schools here say their instructors are IKO-certified (International Kiteboarding Organization), and KiteDR, Cabarete Kite Lessons, GoKite and AGK all include the equipment in their lesson prices (Cabarete Kite Lessons, AGK).
Every price below is in US dollars and comes from the school's own website, read on 21 October 2026. Packages differ in hours and in how many students share an instructor, so compare price per hour of instruction and ask what happens on a day without wind.
What a beginner course costs
KiteDR sells a 9-hour IKO Level 1 course over three to four days for US$630 private or US$540 per person semi-private, with two students per instructor; a 3-hour private taster is US$240 (KiteDR beginner lessons, KiteDR).
Kite Beach Watersports Center lists private beginner lessons at US$85 for one hour, US$240 for three, US$460 for six and US$675 for nine. Its group lessons, for two to four people, are priced per person: US$75, US$210, US$400 and US$540 for the same hours (private, group).
Cabarete Kite Lessons charges US$720 for a private 9-hour beginner course, US$540 per person semi-private, and US$149 for a 2-hour discovery session (Cabarete Kite Lessons). GoKite Cabarete's one-on-one packages are US$449 for 6 hours, US$649 for 9 hours (with two hours of free supervision) and US$949 for 12 hours (GoKite). AGK Kite School sells a 5-hour package for US$330 and a 10-hour package for US$600 (AGK).
Hourly lessons, coaching and rentals
Single private hours run from US$69 at GoKite to US$76 at AGK and US$85 at KiteDR and Kite Beach Watersports (GoKite, AGK, KiteDR beginner lessons, Kite Beach). AGK's group lesson, for up to three students, is US$110 per hour split between them (AGK).
For riders who already ride, KiteDR's progression coaching is US$100 per hour and Kite Beach Watersports' advanced private lessons start at US$110 per hour (KiteDR, Kite Beach). GoKite charges US$55 per hour for advanced lessons on your own gear or US$69 on theirs, US$195 for a 3-hour refresher, and rents full equipment from US$35 an hour, US$79 a day or US$349 a week (GoKite).

How long it takes to learn
Schools describe the same path differently. KiteDR says most students reach independent riding after 9 to 12 hours of instruction and spreads its beginner course over three to four days (KiteDR). AGK says most of its clients are up and riding in about four lessons (AGK). GoKite suggests planning a week, and says upwind riding usually comes with practice after the lessons (GoKite).
Children can start young: KiteDR runs a kids programme from age 7 and GoKite says students should be at least 7 years old (KiteDR beginner lessons, GoKite).
The windiest months
KiteDR says the strongest, most consistent winds blow from December through August, averaging 15 to 25 knots from the northeast, and that September to November is lighter and more variable but still rideable, with fewer crowds (KiteDR). GoKite rates June to mid-September as the best months and October and November as the least reliable (GoKite).
KiteDR recommends booking at least a week ahead from December to August and says it reschedules at no charge when the wind is not safe or suitable (KiteDR lessons). Ask any school for the same promise in writing.
Learning in the Buen Hombre lagoon
Kite Buen Hombre teaches beginners in the shallow, protected lagoon at Playa Buen Hombre in Monte Cristi province and sends riders to Cabarete for ocean riding and advanced coaching. Its stays start at US$85 a night with a four-night minimum, with lessons priced separately, and it names November to April and mid-June to mid-September as Buen Hombre's strongest wind windows (Kite Buen Hombre). The drive from Cabarete is about three to four hours (Kite Buen Hombre).
AGK Kite School also runs one- or two-day Buen Hombre retreats with transport, food and a Paradise Island excursion (AGK); our Cayo Arena guide covers that sandbank.
What to ask before you book
Ask how many students share one instructor (KiteDR caps groups at two; AGK's groups go up to three; Kite Beach Watersports' up to four), whether the instructor holds IKO certification (KiteDR, AGK and Champion Kiteboarding School all say theirs do), and whether radio helmets are used (Cabarete Kite Lessons includes them; GoKite rents them) (KiteDR beginner lessons, AGK, Kite Beach, Champion, Cabarete Kite Lessons, GoKite).
Travelling as a group or on a retreat? Yoga Kite Camp in Puerto Plata combines yoga retreats with IKO kite lessons from Kite Legend School, and says POP airport is 20 minutes away (Yoga Kite Camp). Browse more options on our Cabarete page.
