Best time to visit the Dominican Republic: by season and region
Climate, rainy seasons, hurricane season, whale season and peak pricing in the Dominican Republic, with the best months for beaches, weddings and excursions.

The Dominican Republic is warm all year, so the best time to visit depends on what you want to do and where. The annual mean temperature is about 25 °C, temperatures rarely rise above 32 °C, and the northeast trade winds blow steadily off the Atlantic. Santo Domingo averages about 24 °C in January and 27 °C in July, while Constanza, in the Cordillera Central, averages about 18 °C.
The short answer: December to April is the driest and most popular period in most of the country, mid-January to March adds humpback whales in Samaná Bay, and May to November is warmer, wetter and often cheaper. The details below cover rainfall by region, hurricane season and what each season means for weddings and excursions.
Rainy seasons differ by coast
The country does not have a single rainy season. On the north coast, around Puerto Plata, Cabarete and the Samaná Peninsula, the wettest months are generally November to January, when the trade winds bring Atlantic showers. In the rest of the country, including Punta Cana and Santo Domingo, the rainy season generally runs from May to November.
Tropical rain often comes as short, heavy showers rather than all-day rain, so a wet-season trip can still have plenty of sun. Mountain areas such as Jarabacoa and Constanza are cooler year round; pack a layer for evenings.
Hurricane season
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, and the Dominican Republic is most exposed between August and October. Most weeks pass without a storm, but if you travel then, buy travel insurance, book flexible rates and, for an event, agree an indoor back-up and a postponement policy with your venue in writing.

Seasonal highlights
Whale season: humpback whales gather in Samaná Bay from mid-January to March; Whale Samaná lists tours from January 15 to March 31 at US$65 per adult and US$35 per child. Waterfalls: the official Damajagua site recommends January to June and warns that heavy rain can close sections. City tours: Urbano Tours in Santo Domingo suggests the November–April dry season or June–August.
Prices: rates at many properties are highest from November to April. Villa Espada in Cap Cana publishes rates from US$2,500 per night from May to October and from US$4,000 from November to April, a typical example of the gap.
Season by season at a glance
December to April: driest months outside the north coast, whale season from mid-January, highest demand. May to July: warmer, showers more likely in the south and east, lower villa rates. August to October: the most active part of hurricane season, good value but plan flexibly. November: hurricane season ends in the south and east, while the north coast enters its wetter months.
Best time for a destination wedding
For a beach wedding in Punta Cana or Cap Cana, December to April gives the driest weather but the highest prices and the most competition for dates; May and June are a good compromise before the peak hurricane months. On the north coast and in Samaná, February to April avoids the November–January wet spell. In Santo Domingo, December to April suits outdoor courtyard ceremonies. Whatever the month, book an indoor or covered back-up.
